Normally I do not really care for the cars that I’ve rented. Sometimes I wonder if normal people actually spend money on them. This is so terrible, there is no way that someone spent their hard earned money on this POS. Well, there’s always an exception. When I was in Germany in 2013, I loved the B180 I rented there. So much in fact that I would buy one if they sold it here. I don’t know why I liked it so much, maybe it was because it as a manual or maybe because I was in Europe. All I know is that I want one. Here’s some of the pictures I have of it.
This is probably my favorite picture of myself.
It was limited to 195 kph, maxed it on the autobahn.
At the Porsche museum.
Camped in it at Le Mans. The B-Klasse: part people carrier, part autobahn stormer, part tent.
!!!CAPTION ERROR: MAY BE MULTI-LINE OR CONTAIN LINK!!!That 1.6L POWER!
I took a picture of the VIN, probably so I could find it again if I ever wanted to.
Parked somewhere in Paris.
I liked it so much, I’ve got a model of it. Actually two models.
I got this one off of ebay. That is literally the same car we had down to the wheels.
I got that from the Mercedes Benz museum. It was my souvenir along with the Benz ornament in granite.

I just rented a 2017 Camaro SS convertible for my birthday weekend. I don’t really want the convertible, but I absolutely adored the car beyond that. It’s amazing and I need one.

tbh at the time I only had a base no option Dodge Caravan to compare it to.

I guess if you rent something fun, you might actually like it. I rented a mustang to drive from GA to TX in one day, and since we weren’t flying my friend I was making the trip with was like get something that won’t suck to put 1000 miles on in a day. It was alright, I didn’t emerge on the other end wanting one.

Want as in “lusted after”? We rented a big, loaded up Impala in Arizona last year and it was nice, (stupid e-brake but still very nice.) No, not sporty but awesome for eating up miles at significantly north of posted. Super nice seats too.

I guess when that’s your base, a Sonata is a big improvement. Personally I hate that car, if you gave me the choice between a Sonata and my 1997 Explorer, I’d take the Explorer.

I work for a rental car compay, so I’ve driven everything from the Hyundai Accent to a BMW 528i. But you know what I just can’t get over? What car shocked me the most that I actually want?
The 2016 Nissan Murano. Every time I get in one I am shocked by the build quality and the level of equipment they have on any given trim level.

I bought a Focus in 2013 because it wasn’t a rolling shit show, even as a rental car. I don’t know if that meets the requirements of your question. In 2014 I was given as a rental an AWD 300C. It was a free upgrade and who can pass up a V8? I can see the appeal of owning one of those cars and wouldn’t mind one.

It’s Nissan’s Toyota Avalon, the car in their lineup that, when fully loaded and in top trim, makes you wonder why you would ever want to need to buy an Infiniti.

In Germany in 2009, I rented a then-new W212:
(pic from unpaved road driving).
It was an E200 CDi, which I think was the least powerful model. This was a fairly basic car, with a cloth interior. It was endearing in a way - you could definitely hear and feel the engine, and it seemed about as slow as my fintail. It returned huge mpg too, overall in the mid-upper 40s, I think. Kind of the modern day version of a W123 240D, I liked it.
Amusingly enough, in 2016 I ended up choosing an E250 Bluetec as my DD, maybe it was meant to be.
As you probably know, German rental fleets are in a different universe than those in Murka. Many loaded cars, and many high end models. I’ve rented A8 and 7er there. Renting a car in Germany is fun in itself. I think you rented from Sixt, based on the plate (Sixt cars almost always have a Munich registration).
The B-electric is sold here, and Canuckistan has had gasoline B-class for a number of years.

Sounds like renting one did have something to do with you getting one. Also, I hated that styling when it came out, until I saw it in person and was like damn that looks good.
Also, that Benz I was the first Benz I really had a long term experience driving and I really liked it. It improved my perception of Mercedes. I always liked them but a lot more after renting one.

Not a rental, but a loaner (Sonic was getting a coolant leak fixed).
It was mid-trim Buick Verano. It had good power, it totally crushed the highway (it could do 120kph for hours effortlessly). It handled quite good to my surprise. The 6spd automagic shifted very smooth. It was a good amount of luxury, not S class levels, but not Daewoo sparse. The seat was also incredibly comfy. That’s when I realized why old people love Buicks.
I rent one of I had too.

I think the style has aged well, and can be argued to be sharper looking than the replacement model. It doesn’t look like a car that hit the market 8 years ago. I like the angular styling over softer styling.
Definitely a different world from the BMWs you like, but in the same galaxy. Speaking of BMW, I also had an F11 (5er Touring) as a rental, interesting to have a car not sold on this continent.

Yes actually - the current Jeep Grand Cherokee. I actually looked at them when I was shopping for what ended up being the Forester, but it quickly became clear I wouldn’t get one with under 100k miles for the price I needed. Also the current X5, but in my dreams can I afford one. Things I’ve rented that I hated, off the top of my head: Corrola, Sienna (previous and current gen - seriously these things suck so hard), multiple Altimas, Captiva (the worst car I’ve ever driven), Clio (nevermind, actually the Clio may have been the worst car I’ve ever driven), a goddamn Ford E-250 van, a GMT900 Tahoe, and the current Mazda3 (these are basically crap, I truly don’t get how we keep hearing enthusiasts slobber all over these things), the previous swoopy Sonata (numb steeering, terrible visibility) and the current Pathfinder. Others that were good but I’d never buy myself - Camry, GMT900 Suburban (yes, it really is so much better than the Tahoe, just drive the 2 of them back to back), current Fusion, previous-gen Edge, Sorrento, Grand Caravan (amazing how much nicer this is the than the Sienna - too bad about the reliability, though), previous-gen V6 Muatang. Then there are some more that I’ve totally forgotten about so they must not have been too good or bad. Also there was that time I had a 1996 Cutlass Supreme from Rent-a-Wreck in 2007 but that’s a story for another time. I think the moral of this rant is that a Camry is a better car than an Altima but Dodge makes a better van than Toyota until it inevitably eats its transmission then you’ll realize you should’ve just bought a used R-Class.

I had a Mazda3 as a rental. It was alright, I think it was alright because I drove it like you’re supposed to drive a rental, traction control off. It’d light up the tires, in a puddle.
I’m glad you agree that Hyundai has terrible steering. Like it’s so bad I’m surprised people pay money for them.

I made a comment about this last week so apologies if you’ve heard it before, but mid-late 2000's Hyundai steering wasn’t so bad. I owned 2007 Santa Fe and it was OK. I drove a few other Hyundais from that era that felt similar. But everything since 2011 or so has been pretty numb. I’m assuming something to do with electric power steering.

I think you made that comment to me, it’s all good. I was going to try and find it, but i can’t.
I think it has everything to do with EPS, I don’t know how they manage to make it so bad. Chevy’s isn’t bad. BMW isn’t either, it’s not as good as their old steering, but it’s not bad. Hyundai’s is shit, no other word for it.

I’ve never been in such a comfortable road trip car. What a wonderful car. If I weren’t looking for a 320i, I would probably consider an A4 2.0T ultra Premium.

I’ve driven several 320is before. They are pretty quick in my opinion. Then again, I drive a 2015 Passat TSI. 0-60 in 7.5 makes the 320i’s 6.8 feel like an absolute rocket. (Note: I’ve driven the entire current lineup minus the M3)
If you really want to drive a painfully slow 3-Series, try an F30 316i. I drove a 6 speed manual one in Colombia back in 2014. Good lord was it slow.

I’m thinking about getting a CPO 2016 320i LCI soon. I’m giving the Passat back to my parents. We’ve had it since new for a year and 30k miles. As much as I really want a Mini Hardtop, I’d rather pay a little bit more for a CPO 320i. I like the Mustang EcoBoost Premium, but it’s not as practical as a 320i. I should note that I’m 6'2", so the Mustang would also be a bad idea if I have to carry any of my friends (who are all 6'0"). I really wanted a specific new 2016 228i in my area that was perfect in my eyes, but they ended up making it into a loaner, so it has like 9k miles now. I’ve pretty much settled on the 320i. For its intended purpose (getting me through college), I couldn’t think of a better car in the price range I’m looking at. My parents loved the 320is we’ve checked out more than any other car I’ve considered. Hopefully I get it very soon.

I wouldn’t say I want it, but I’ve developed a lot of love for this little thing:
I rented this 2016 Hyundai i10 3-Cylinder 5MT in Iceland for 6 days and drove about 500 miles for like $22 a day. Over those six days, I:
-Drove it up a mountainside
- Made it do a full-out nosedive on concrete after taking a speedbump way too fast
- Pulled the e-brake a lot
- Hit and killed a medium-sized bird
- Chronically flogged the engine
- Offroaded
- Tried to teach my friend stick
After all that, it still managed like 50MPG and was really fun to drive in a rental car-ish type of way...but times 10.

In South Africa, we rented a 2015 Toyota Fortuner (Hilux SUV) with a 2.5-liter diesel that has had me wanting a body on frame 4WD again. It was solid, rough and ready for anything. The Hilux/Fortuner apparently don’t meet the American/Canadian market for noise, vibration and harshness isolation which is why we have the more friendly Tacoma/4runner. I think I would step into something a bit harsher to save some dollars of the asking MSRP. The 2.5-liter diesel was tepid but eager and obviously forbiden fruit in our market. Looks like I’ll have to wait for the states 25-year import rule.

We rented a brand-new (literally less than 100 miles) Passat TSI for a road trip in 2014, and proceeded to put almost 2k miles on it in a week. I really enjoyed it, because I was coming from a POS ‘05 Malibu. When we were new-car shopping in 2015, we seriously considered buying one. We did have trouble with the entertainment system, and that weighed into the decision.
We didn’t, in the end...but it was a contender (mostly because of pricing). We chose an Accord EX instead.

I have never been in a rental and thought: Yes, this is more pleasant that eating a soggy napkin.
I’ve even tried renting “nice” cars through Sixt, which is the closest I’ve gotten to the “soggy napkin” benchmark. First one was a CTS which was OK, but had way too many driver aids and the controls weren’t well thought out. Next one was a A3 which was just terrible all around.

Nope. I’m looking for an 8-speed Steptronic automatic one. I really like the ZF 8 speed in the 3 Series. I’ve driven a manual 320i and it’s great, but I prefer the automatic one. I also appreciate the fact that it’s only turning 1600 rpm at 60 mph. I’m going to have to use the car to drive from Tallahassee to Boca Raton and back now that I’m in college (7.5 hrs each way). I’ve been really picky in my search for a 320i. I like some of the exterior colors, but I only want a black interior. I’m ok with either SensaTec or Dakota Leather. Also, they’re made in one of three factories: Munich, Regensburg, or Rosslyn, South Africa. I want one made in Munich or Regensburg only. I also don’t want one with a sunroof. I don’t like sunroofs. I’d also prefer one without power seats.

We get both German and South African ones, but I only want a German one. Also, yes, I’m looking for a stripper model. All of the ones I’ve driven have been stripper models. It’s hard to find one without a sunroof in Florida, but there are more than you’d expect. The most loaded 320i I’ve driven had two options: Sport Package and Melbourne Red Metallic. My ideal 320i, aside from my dream one in BMW Individual Arctic Metallic, is either a Jet Black one with literally no options or a Sport Package one in either Melbourne Red or Jet Black.

Seatac. I’ve considered LA, but I’ve never managed to find a deal worth taking.

The gas cars aren’t exactly slouches and I think most bugs have been worked out, but the little diesel might be the way to go if you want to pile on the miles. It has been proven in Europe, and is excellent on the open road. My highest indicated mph on a 120 mile highway drive was 48 overall.

I rented mustangs on 3 separate occasions.
2015 GT Premium
2016 EcoBoost Convertible
2015 EcoBoost Premium
I liked all three and I really want a mustang now. I thought the EB had plenty of power for the street and the interior was nice. Not S Class nice, but for a reasonably priced sports car, it wasn’t bad.

I put 1100 miles on this in a day, I didn’t love it on the other side though. I really didn’t like the interior and I felt like the belt line was too high.

I put well over 1000 miles on both of the Boostsangs. I’ll have to find my rental recipients for exact mileage, but it was ~1600 on the last one. I drove St. Louis > Dayton > Nashville > Memphis > St. Louis in 4 days. Plus a lot of local driving.
Did you have the base rental car spec? I thought the premium trim was pretty nice. Apple car play / Android Auto on a big screen, heated / cooled seats, and some other gimmicky gadgets made for a pleasant drive. The base with cloth leaves a lot to be desired, though.
Here is a pic I took in BFE Arkansas:

I guess I just had a basic rental car spec. Mine was a v6.

Oh ok. I don’t even think you can get the v6 premium in this generation. I’m not super savvy on Mustangs, but I do like they current style. I’m sure it’s not nearly as nice as the m3 but I think it is nice for a non-luxury brand. The belt-line is high, but I kinda like being surrounded by the car. It makes it hard to see but with the backup camera and spot mirrors, I felt the visibility was adequate.

Yeah, it was nowhere near as nice as the M3. I mean, you have a Ferrari I feel like that should raise your standards some haha. There was just some really cheap feeling plastic, it was like you could tell that’s where they saved money. I like the visibility as opposed to feeling like I’m on a u-boat.

That’s true. Pretty much very surface in the Ferrari is leather and I love it. But, I also drive a 16 year old Miata so the Mustang felt like a CL 550 compared to that lolol.

That’s fair enough.
Also on a random note I feel like we’re both around the same age and both have similar educations and things like they, plus we’ve both got cars we’ve dreamed of.
